Biography

Sabattis Francis was born in March 1855 in Maine, United States. His parents were Joseph M Francis and Lydia Ranco.[1]

1870s

In Jun 1870, Sabattis Francis (11) lived in Old town, Penobscot county, Maine with Joe M (52), John (28), Mary (5), and Elizabeth (18). They were Penobscot Indian race. [2]

He married Marie Anne Nicolas in 1875. Mary had been born in Canada, the daughter of Thomas and Angelique Thomas. Together they had 7 children.

In Nov 1875, their daughter Louisa was born. [3] In Jan 1878, their daughter Nellie C was born. [3]

1880s

In 1880, Setattis Francis (23) lived in Greenbush, Penobscot county, Maine with his father Joseph M (65), mother Lydia (50), sister Louise (18), and daughters/nieces Mary L (4) and Helen (1). [4]

In Nov 1885, their son Joesph Francis was born in Maine. [3] In Oct 1886, their son Gilbert Francis was born in Maine. [3] In 1887, their son Birt Francis was born. [5]

1900s

In 1900, Sabatles Francis (45) lived with his wife Mary M (47), their daughter Louisa Mitchell (24), daughter Nellie C Loring (22), son-in-law Peter J Loring (24), son Joseph (16), and son Gilbert (15). Sabatles and Mary had been married 26 years; Mary was the mother of 7 children with 4 living. Louisa was widowed with no children. Nellie and Peter had been married 5 years; Nellie had no children. All were Indians of the Penobscot tribe: Sabatles was 1/2 white; Mary was 1/8 white; Louisa, Nellie, Peter, Joseph, and Gilbert were 1/4 white. Sabatles worked as a guide; Mary, Louisa, and Nellie were basket weavers; Peter was a wood carver; Joseph was a day laborer; Gilbert was at school. [3]

In Feb 1908, his son Birt (21) married Clara Polchies (21) in York, New Brunswick, Canada. Mary was the daughter of Louis and Mary Paul Polchies. [5] In Mar 1908, his daughter Louise E Mitchell married Stephen Sockbison in Indian Island, Knox county, Maine. Stephen was the son of Soch and Mary Anne Sullivan Sochbison. [6]

1910s

In 1910, Sabbattis M Francis (53) lived in Old Town City, Indian Island Indian Reservation in Penobscot county, Maine with his wife Mary A (56), son Joseph N (26), daughter-in-law Mary J (27), and grandsons Maurice (6) and Harry A (3 months). Sabbattis and Mary had been married 35 years; Mary was the mother of 7 children with 4 living. Joseph and Mary had been married 7 years; Mary had 2 children both living. Sabbattis worked as a laborer for woods and rivers; Mary and Mary were basket makers at home; Joseph was a retail merchant in a confectionary. [7]

On March 9, 1919, Sabattis M Francis (63) died in Old Town, Penobscot, Maine. [8] He was buried at Penobscot Indian cemetery in Old Town. [9]

1910 Census indian population Indian Island, Maine Lists him in family #27, Dwelling #29, at age 52. with his wife Mary Age 56, and having been married 37 years. His is listed as being 1/2 indian having a penobscot mother and a french father.
