Biography

A 20 year old James Francis, carpenter, is listed in the 1841 Census living in the home of his parents James (also a carpenter) and Elizabeth in Fullers Hill, St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. He was the eldest of five siblings in the home. Everyone in the household was listed as having been born in Norfolk. [1]

Banns were read for James Francis and Julia Maria Simnel for marriage on 23 Sep 1842 at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. It was a first marriage for both bride and groom. [2] In the marriage register, James is listed as a carpenter, son of James also a carpenter. Julia's father is recorded as Robert, a shoemaker. Both bride and groom were recorded as being of full age. The bride's surname has been transcribed in a variety of ways including Simnet, Simuet. In the following source, Julia's signature appears as Simnet [3]

In the 1851 Census, James and Julia and their three children were listed living as lodgers in the household of Charles Howes, a master shoemaker, at Street, Lound, Mutford, Suffolk, England. James's occupation was listed as carpenter. [4]

James, a carpenter, and Julia, along with their children Helen (10), Julia (6) and Robert (3), immigrated to Australia travelling on the Marshall Bennett. The ship departed from Southhampton, and arrived in Geelong on 11 Aug 1854. The family were listed as being from Norfolk. [5]

James and Julia had at least another 3 children together in Australia: Philip (1856), Sarah Colby (1859) and Emily (1862).
