Biography

David was born in 1818, his exact birth date is not known and has been calculated from his age given on various documents throughout his life. David's parents were David Francis and Justina Arnold.

At the age of 9, David was baptised at St Elli parish church Llanelly on the 22nd of January 1828, his brothers Thomas and Isaac and his sister Mary were baptised at the same time with Isaac being the youngest aged 2.

On the 5th January 1844, David married Margaret John at St Elli parish church. In the marriage record he is described as a bachelor and an Engineer living in the Wern area of Llanelly. Both david and his wife Margaret signed the marriage register indicating they could both read and write.

In 1851, the census records David, his wife and two children living at Marble Hall in Llanelly. His occupation is given as an engine tender.

By 1861, David and his family are still recorded as living in Marble Hall but now the address also shows that they are at the "South Star" an Inn although David's occupation is given as an "Engine Worker at Colliery", he or his wife Margaret must also now be a "Publican" or "Licensed Victualler" but it has not been recorded. There are five children recorded as living at the same address on the census record.

The 1871 census still shows the family as living at the "South Star" and David is described as a "Weigher" . There is still no reference to him or his wife being publicans or licensed victuallers. There are four of their children recorded as living at the same address.

David passed away on the 3rd March 1881 and is buried at the Box Cemetery in Llanelly, he was buried with his daughter Elizabeth who had died aged 19 five years earlier. David's wife Margaret was also buried in the same grave when she passed away in 1900.

David's will was proved at Carmarthen on the 21st January 1882 his wife Margaret was the sole executor. His estate was valued at £87 and in the probate summary, his occupation was given as a "Licensed Victualler" at the "South Star" Llanelly.
