Research Notes

The death records give his birthplace as England, but given that they don't provide his parent's names in the spaces allotted for them, it doesn't seem like the informant knew the facts about the deceased particularly well, and the US censuses taken while he was alive give it as Wales, so that is more likely to be correct.

Either he had a previous marriage, or a lot of the children listed on the 1860 census with him are actually stepchildren although listed as Francises in the census. I can't see the children in the 1851 census of Wales as Francises.

FindAGrave has him marrying Nancy Thompson in 1869 but I don't see how this can be as he appears to be still with Margaret in the 1870 US census.

There was a John Francis the right age to be Margaret's husband who was born in Llanover, the same as she was.^[1] Could this be her husband? He was still single in 1851 so this would only fit if the children were stepchildren; his father (from the 1841 census of Llanover) was William Francis, an agricultural labourer not a miller.

More evidence is needed showing that the John Francis who married Margaret Parry in Wales in 1855 is the same person as the John Francis who lived in Ohio. Probably this has already been found by someone and just needs writing up here. The American records for the children may give their mother's maiden name.
