Muriel was born in Esk, Queensland in 1920. She was the daughter of George Francis and Harriet Taylor. [1]
She did all her schooling at Kumbia State School. On leaving school at about the age of 14, she assisted her mother at home for some years. During this time her sporting relaxation was tennis, which she played particularly well. She later obtained a position at the Maryborough Base Hospital.
Muriel married Robert McBirnie Lafferty of Coolabunia on 11 Apr 1942.[2] He was later killed in action on Bougainville in July 1945. Muriel and Bob had one daughter, Janet, who was born in March 1945.
Muriel later married Thomas Ford Davis, and for some years they conducted the Post Office at Scarness, Hervey Bay. They then moved to Atherton in North Queensland. Muriel and Tom had four children, Margaret, Pam, Tommy George and Susan. After Tom died in 1980, Muriel returned to Kingaroy for some time, to take care of her aging father. She then lived with different members of her family in North Queensland and Caboolture until her death in 2005.[3]
Through all her tragedies Muriel retained a happy personality, accepting life's difficulties with good humour and always seeing the best in everyone. She was a devoted member of the local Anglican community wherever she went, and with her sharp mind became a keen and well respected bridge player. She was a person dearly loved by all.
