Biography

The birth of Edith Eleanor Francis, mother's maiden name Gerrish, was registered in the second quarter of 1868 in Wandsworth, London. ^[1]

Thirteen year old Edy Elener Francis is listed in the 1881 Census, living in her parents' home in Harriss Yard, Putney, Wandsworth, London & Surrey. She was the second eldest of five children aged from 17 to under a year old, and the only daughter. Her father, John Francis (born ~1836 in Chichester, Sussex) was working as a Carman. Her mother, Emma was listed as born ~1836 in Westbury, Wiltshire.^[2]

Edith was not living with her parents at the time of the 1891 Census. ^[3] Perhaps she is the 22 year old Edith E. Francis living in Pelham Crescent, Kensington, London & Middlesex, born Putney. She was working as a domestic servant, and the other occupant of the house was also a domestic servant. ^[4]

On 22 Sep 1892 Edith Eleanor Francis and James Henry Madgwick married by banns at Putney, Surrey, England. A transcript of the marriage document records Edith's age as 24, her father as John Francis. James's age was recorded as 25, his father Thomas Madgwick. ^[5]

James and their eldest son seem to be away from the family home at the time of the 1901 Census. Edith is listed living at 10, Kate Street, Streatham, Wandsworth, London & Surrey, with four children: James (5), Florence (4), Edith (2), and Annie (0). Like his mother, James was listed as born in Putney. The three girls were listed as being born in Balham, Surrey. ^[6]

In the 1911 Census, they were living away from London in Rafflingwood Cottage Petworth, Petworth, Sussex. James was listed as a General Labourer, Estate. They now had eight children in their home, four of whom were at school, the eldest and youngest girls were at home. The two eldest boys were working as general labourers. The youngest child (Nellie May b.~1909) had been born in Fittleworth, so the family had moved out of London some time between the birth of Ada Maude about 1906, and the birth of Nellie May in 1909. ^[7]

Edith was still living in Petworth at the time of the 1929 Census.

The death of an eighty year old Edith E. Madgwick was registered in the first quarter of 1949 in Midhurst, Sussex. ^[8]
