Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Amos Frank is a part of US Black heritage.

Amos was born in 1886. He is the son of Eugene Frank and Emma Bradley.

The 1900 U.S. Census lists "Amas" as a 14 year old black boy working as a farm laborer and living with his family in Ville Platte. It is noted that Amas is unable to read, write, or speak English.[1]

The 1910 U.S. Census lists Amos as a 24 year old married black man living with his wife, Elisebeth, and a 3 year old son in St. Landry. Amas and Elisebeth have been married for four years. Amas is now listed as speaking English but still unable to read or write. He works as a farmer on rented land.[2]

The 1920 U.S. Census lists Amos as a 31 year old married black man living with his wife, Martha, and three children (at least one of whom was from his first marriage). Amos works as a farmer on rented land. He is listed as unable to read, write, or speak English.[3]

The 1930 U.S. Census lists Amos as a 45 year old married negro man living with his wife, Martha, and three children in Evangeline Parish. Amos did not attend school and is unable to read, write, or speak English. He works as a farmer on rented land.[4]

The 1930 census also states an adopted son, 16 year old negro Alfred Ardoin, was living with the family. Alfred has not attended school but he is able to read and write. Alfred can also speak English.[5]

The 1940 U.S. Census lists Amos as a 55 year old married negro man living with his wife, Martha, three children, and a granddaughter in Evangeline Parish. Amos works as a farmer on rented land. He has never attended school.[6]

The granddaughter referenced in this census is Elnora Guillory, a ten year old negro girl. It is not indicated whom Elnora's parents are. It does state Elnora has attended school up to 3rd grade.
