Biography

Flag of Somerset (adopted 2013)
Frederick Frankland Bt was born in Somerset, England.

Sir Frederick William Frankland 8th BT, was born May 11, 1793, at Yarlington, Somerset, England, he died March 11, 1878, at the age of 84, at Hilldrop Billa, Torquay, Devon. He is the son of Reverend Roger Frankland and Hon. Catherine Colville.[1][2]

Sir Frederick married on the 21st of August 1821, in Paris, Katherine Margaret Scarth, the daughter of Isaac Scarth, Esq. of Stakesby, Yorkshire and Elizabeth Johnston. Sir Frederick and Katherine were the parents of eight children.[1][3]In 1878, when the book 'Debrett's Peerage, Baronetage, Knightage and Companionage' was written, two of their sons and one daughter were still living, plus one of Sir Frederick's sisters. Sir Frederick's daughter Eliza Henrietta Augusta wife of Lieut. Col. Frederick Smith Vacher, placed in the St. Simon's Church the memorial tablet and window to honor her parents and siblings.[4]

Sir Frederick was educated first at the Military College, Marlow, Buckinghamshire, England, and secondly at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, Kent, England. He was in the Army, and fought in the Peninsular Wars, December 1812-1814, and in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. He received Peninsula and Waterloo metals.

Sir Frederick served fifteen years as a Magistrate and Dep. Lieut. of Sussex.

On March 11, 1849, he succeeded his cousin, Sir Robert Frankland-Russell as the 8th Baronet of Thirkleby, Yorkshire, England. For 200 years the estate had descended with the title, yet when Sir Frederick became the 8th Baronet of Thirkleby, the estate didn't come with the title. Sir Frederick to mark a period of family misfortune and to testify his submission to the decrees of Providence, adopted a second motto on his family Crest: "What cannot be cured must be endured."[4]
