Dorothea was born in 1901, first child of George Franklin and Clara Hafner. [1]
Dorothea's father was a dairyman and their dairy was at Day's Rd, Wilston when she was a child.
When she was 11, Dorothea featured in the Telegraph newspaper, along with her siblings Mervyn and Ivan, for donating their money box contents of 10s to the Children's Hospital Appeal. [2]
In 1913, when Dorothea was 12, the family moved to Eagle Farm Rd, Whinstanes. This was a difficult year for the family: in February her father was prosecuted and fined for diluting the milk they sold (it should be noted that this accusation was not uncommon and measurement of milk concentration was an inexact science at the time). Then in December her father was hit by a tram and sustained severe head injuries. [3] [4]
In 1922, the family moved to 'Inglesbatch' / 'Englesbatch' on Schneider Rd at Eagle Farm. This house was built on the site of the former Convict Women's Prison and Factory. The family has a plan of the site drawn by Dorothea's sister 'Tommy' that includes the location where convict leg irons were found. [5]
It was also in 1922 that the Eagle Farm Aerodrome was constructed across the road from the farm. The Queensland Heritage Register reports that "The Eagle Farm Aerodrome, west of Schneider Road, was established by the Civil Aviation Branch of the Department of Defence in 1922 as the civilian landing ground for the city of Brisbane. Prior to this the 34 hectare site had been used for dairying by previous owners, David Wilson and William Lynn. Other dairy farms continued to operate nearby, most significantly that on the eastern side of Schneider Road on sub A allotment 4 portion 3, Parish of Toombul, County of Stanley which from 1922 was owned by George Franklin." [6]
Dorothea married Arthur Goldsbrough in 1925 at Hamilton Methodist Church. The marriage notice can be seen in the Marriages section on this page. [7] [8]
Dorothy and Arthur had two sons and a daughter. The family lived at Peary Street Northgate for many years.
Husband Arthur was described as a salesman on electoral rolls, and ran his own store in Nundah for several years at least.
Dorothea passed away in 1987. Her memorial stone can be seen here.
