Biography

There is no James, son of Thomas and Jane, mentioned in the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin.[1] Please DO NOT link to parents without citing legitimate (non family tree) sources. Thank you.

James and an unknown wife,[2] had the following children:

  1. James Franklin was born 08 Jul 1682 in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts.[3]
  2. Lydia Franklin was born 18 Jun 1688 in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts.[4]
  3. Abel Franklin was born 18 May 1690 in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts.[5]

He married a second wife, Elizabeth Hammon on 17 Apr 1695 in Swansea, Bristol County, Massachusetts.[6][7] Note that this second source states his first wife's name was unknown.[2]

James had been a soldier in Phillip's War. On 9 December 1675 he was one of Captain Samuel Moseley's volunteer troopers and was present at the Great Swamp Fight later that month. On 24 August 1676 he had served under Captain Daniel Henchman in Captain Thomas Brattle's Company.[8] On 24 August 1676 his pay was assigned at Braintree, Massachusetts. This would indicate that at that date he was probably a resident of that town. He was evidently a young man at the time of the war. James was living in Rhode Island in October 1693 when he bought land in Dartmouth. In 1706 he was of Swansey. In 1710 he was styled "cordwainer" and was of Reheboth, but by 1716 had returned to Swansea. It seems probably that James Franklin was a brother of John Franklin of Swansea, cordwainer, who with his wife Ruth sold land there in 1717 and James Franklin was a witness.[9]

In the early 1700s, James sold land several times in Swansea, Bristol County, Massachusetts. On 4 Aug 1705, he sold land to John Brown. [10] On 7 Mar 1709, he sold land to Nathaniel Kingsley. [11] On 4 Oct 1716, he sold land to his son James Franklin Jr. [12]

On 28 May 1717, he witnessed a deed for John Franklin (probably a relative, possibly his brother ?) in Swansea, Bristol County, Massachusetts.[13]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

Regarding Eunice Barnes, as wife of this James Franklin- I have seen only two possible sources for a James Franklin married to a Eunice or Uni. The Boston Transcript (which was a query), mentioned "Uni." As seen below, it is clearly talking about James who died in 1746, but it confuses the children with a previous generation.

The other source is of a marriage intent in Barrington, Bristol County, Rhode Island, between a Eunice Barnes, and James Franklin (who did die in 1746), who I believe may be the son (not the father) of James Franklin who married Martha Ormsby. This one should not be confused with a James Franklin "of Providence," who married Hannah Talman or Tolman, and had children in Providence, Attleboro, and Scituate. Both of these James Franklin's are mentioned on the same page in the Rhode Island, Vital Extracts, 1636-1899, Vol. 06: Bristol County: Births, Marriages, Deaths; Barrington - intentions and marriages records, but they are different James'. I believe that James and Martha's son, James, born 16 Dec 1709, is the one that married Eunice Barnes. They had three children, at least, born in Barrington, RI, and Rehoboth, Mass.

Here is the full Boston Transcript item: Boston Transcript 12 Sept 1923 (1045) "Who was James Franklin - - (d.1746). Dartmouth 1682, wife Uni. Uni appt. admin 4 Nov 1746. Children 1.) James b.8 July 1682. m.1705, Martha. In Swansea until 1738-9, then Scituate, RI. He d.21 Oct 1756. 9 children: Philip; Lydia; James; Gideon; Ichabod b.1 July 1713; Abigail; Elisha; Mary; Uriel 2.) Dan 3.) Lydia 4.) Abel."

James Franklin 1650 is the big question in my husband's family tree. I'm not sure it will ever be found if he was born in England or Ma. or if he is related to the Ben Franklin. I have been looking for many years. My husband was DNA tested and found to be from James line. This was the Franklin DNA study. Lisa Franklin was part of this study. His family was FY3. His name John Kenneth Franklin. He died April 25, 2015. Sandra Franklin
The ancestry of James Franklin born abt 1650 first recorded of Braintree Massachusetts has yet to be proven and any connection to THE Ben Franklin the statesman has yet to be documented. He is my maternal 8th great grandfather thru my grandfather Meryl Franklin. I have been dna tested. If anyone has any documented proof there is a connection I'm sure the Smithsonian Institute would be interested .Till then please stop pushing a false narrative and guessing at the family ties on WikiTree . This is supposed to be a one world tree and it will help no one if the tree is wrong. Anyone merging with this tree will end up with a false undocumented wishful thinking lie.
