Bentley was born in 1795 or 1797 in South Carolina, possibly in Chester or Fairfield county. [1][2][3][4] It is unknown who were the parents of Bentley Franklin. One possibility is Esom Franklin and Hannah (last name unknown). Bentley died after 1860 in Haywood, North Carolina.
Bentley participated in the War of 1812 as a Private in the 1st Regiment (Means), South Carolina Militia.[5]
Bentley married first Lavinia Yarborough about 1816 in South Carolina.[6] Bentley and Lavinia may have been distant cousins (her great aunt was Ann Spurlock Franklin; her great uncle was Robert Franklin). Lavinia was the daughter of Richard Yarborough and Sarah Watkins. Bentley and Lavinia had the following children:
Elizabeth "Eliza" Franklin (Noland) was born about 1816 in South Carolina.
Esom "Esau" M. Franklin was born about 1820 in South Carolina.[7]
Elias Franklin was born about 1823 in South Carolina.
John Henry Franklin was born about 1825 in South Carolina.[8]
Decatur Minor Franklin was born about 1828 in South Carolina.[9]
Sarah Jane Franklin (Grooms) was born about 1829 in North Carolina.[9]
Henry Jackson Franklin was born about 1829 in North Carolina.
Dorcas Franklin was born about 1830[9] in North Carolina.[9]
Elisha Franklin was born about 1834 in North Carolina.
Matilda "Tildy" Franklin (Messer) was born about 1836 in North Carolina.[9]
In 1819, Bentley and his wife signed a Quit Claim Deed with her father Richard Yardborough in Chester, South Carolina. [10] Between 1820 and 1830, Bentley and Lavina moved to Haywood, North Carolina. [1][2] It is believed that sometime between 1830 and 1840, Bentley and Lavina divorced. Lavinia died in Haywood, North Carolina after 1860. In 1850, Lavina and Bentley appear on separate census records as neighbors. Bentley was living with his adult daughter Sarah Grooms at this time. [3]
Bentley and his family lived in South Carolina until 1828. In 1829, they moved to Haywood County, North Carolina. It appears that Bentley and Lavinia divorced before 1840.
On 24 Oct 1841, Bentley married Elizabeth Davis in Haywood, North Carolina. [11][12][13] Elizabeth was the daughter of Samuel L Davis and Rachel Creson. Bentley and Elizabeth had no children together.
In 1850, Lavinia appears living living with several of her children and her future husband Ezekiel. [9] On 2 Apr 1853, Lavinia married Ezekiel England in Haywood, North Carolina. [14][15][16]
Bentley appeared on the 1860 census living his his son John. [4] He passed away after 1860, probably in Haywood county, North Carolina.
