Biography

Floyd Earl Franklin, born 17 April 1894. [1] to David J. Franklin and Elmira Winters, [2][3] married 03 Sep 1924 in Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan to Josephine Erma McRae, born in St. John's, Clinton County, Michigan to Charles H. McRae and Ann Thompson . [4]

Prior to his marriage to Josephine, Floyd had first married 16 Oct 1912, Caro, Tuscola County, Michigan to Winnifred Muriel[5] Spencer, born Wilmot, Cheboygan County, Michigan to George Spencer and Josephine McCain. [6] By 05 Jun 1917, when Floyd registered for the draft, the couple had had at least one child, [7] Beryl Franklin, born about 1914, in Michigan. Beryl is listed with Floyd and step mother Josephine on the 1930 census. Floyd and Winnifred were divorced and Winnifred died 19 October 1971.[8]

It is interesting to note that while Floyd consistently reported his birth place as Kingston, MI at the time of the WWI draft registration he reported a birth date that made him 6 months older than his birth as recorded in the Douglas County, MI birth register (see sources below). At the time of the draft record, Floyd is described as being tall and of medium build with brown hair and brown eyes. He persisted with this earlier birth date during the WWII draft [9] and it appears on his tombstone as well, although it is not clear why.

In 1920 we find Floyd, listed as married, at the residence of his sister Ella and her husband Henry Gabert. [10] [11] His sister is also listed on his WWII draft card in 1942 as his nearest living kin.

Floyd died 14 Jan 1958 and is buried in Block 8, Lot 12 in Lakeview Cemetery, Clarkston, Oakland County, Michigan. Josephine is buried with him.[12]

Notes from my sister, Nancy A. (born Franklin) Parker who has access to Ancestry's data base: US World War II Draft Registration Cards 1942; Us World War I Draft Registration Cards 1917-1918; US Social Security Applications & Claims Index 1936-1937; and US Find-A- Grave Index 1600 - Current -- all say Date of Birth is 17 April 1894

Note regarding birth date: "Michigan Births, 1867-1902," with a date of 25 Dec 1894 is not a birth certificate; the document says "Return of Births in to Court". Floyd Earl Franklin was born 17 April 1894. It is a County Register of births by county, registered by the family at the courthouse. These were maintained by a number of state counties prior to the requirement for state birth certificates.
