Biography

Elisha Franklin was born about 1816 [1] [2] in Salem, Stokes County, North Carolina.[3] He may have been the son of Lewis Franklin and Nancy Witt of Stokes, NC. [4] From DNA test results, it appears there is an NPE (Non-paternity event) in this line, and the line may be related to the Pierce family. [5] Elisha married Sarah "Salley" Crosswhite on 29 Nov 1837 in Stokes County, North Carolina.[6]

He appears on the 1840 census of Clinton County, Illinois, where son DeWitt Franklin was likely born, in fact the single male child under 5 may be DeWitt.[2] On 25 May 1841 Elisha Franklin of Clinton County, IL purchased 40 acres of land described as the NW quarter of the NE quarter of Section 28 in Township 1N of Range 5W.[7] Elisha moved his family from Illinois to Missouri by 01 May 1849 when he was living in Morgan County, Missouri and purchased 40 acres of land described as the NE quarter of the NE quarter of Section 32 in Township 43 or Range 16.[8] He died sometime after the land purchase likely in early 1850 as wife Sarah appears on the 1850 census of Moniteau County, Missouri (borders Morgan County) with the following children and no spouse.[9]

  1. DeWitt Clinton Franklin was born about 1840 in Illinois.[9]
  2. Marion A.[10] Franklin was born about 1842 in Missouri.[9]
  3. John W. Franklin[9][10] was born in Versailles, Morgan County,[11] Missouri 22[12] March of 1845.[13][14][15][16] He died 27 Dec 1919 in Mountain Grove, Wood Township, Wright County, MIssouri[11] and is buried in Mountain Valley Cemetery, Wright County, Missouri.[12]
  4. Calvin H. Franklin was born 18[17] November 1850[18] in California, Maniteou County,[17] Missouri.[10] He died in Stark, Hickory County, Missouri on 08 Mar 1916.[17] The father is listed as unknown on his death certificate so while we have presumed Calvin was the posthumously born son of Elisha, it is possible he was not Elisha's child.[17]

Elisha's estate settlement was completed in September of 1853 in Morgan County, Missouri.[19]

  5. Due to the NPE in this line, there is some speculation that Elisha Franklin may have been the son of an Elisha Pierce of Stokes, NC and Nancy DeWitt (who was married to Lewis Franklin). I took over managing this profile primarily because I'm related to Elisha. According to my recent DNA test through FTDNA (#960563) the descendants of Elisha Franklin and myself, the descendant of John Alexander Pierce 1779-1842, share a common DNA. 5 steps at 111 markers, 3 steps at 67 markers and 2 steps at 37 markers. Elisha Pierce might be a good posibility, but he wasn't the only Pierce male in the area who could have fathered Elisha. Elisha is also not know to be a relative of mine.
