Biography

Seeking male Franklin surnamed documented descendant of Thomas B. Franklin to participate in Y DNA testing in the Franklin Y DNA Project. Contact the project for information.

Thomas B.[1][2][3] Franklin was born in 1794[4] in South Carolina.[5][6][7]

He served during the War of 1812 as a private, substituting for Henry Franklin in the company of drafted militia commanded by Captain Lovelace Mott under the regimental command of Col. Johnson, at Fort Claiborne and Fort Morgan, having enlisted for six months at Claiborne, Alabama on 20 Jan 1815, serving until peace was declared and was honorably discharged 27 Mar 1815 at Claiborne. He first applied for bounty land for this service on 16 Dec 1850 at Clarke County, Alabama stating he was 56 years old at that time. He later applied for 40 acres of bounty land, under warrant #17174, on 16 Aug 1855 while living in Clarke County, Alabama. On 18 Sep 1856 he received a bounty land warrant certificate (#84304) for 120 acres of land for his service.[4]

He married Mary Pate on 06 Dec 1819 in Clarke County, Alabama[8][9][1] and had the following presumed children:

  1. Henry Franklin was born about 1827 in Alabama.[6]
  2. Joseph Franklin was born about 1829 in Alabama.[6]
  3. Benjamin Franklin was born about 1831 in Alabama.[6]
  4. Rebeca Franklin was born about 1833 in Alabama.[6]

He appears on the 1830 census of Clarke County, Alabama with the following household members:

males)-5:2 ; 5-10:1 ; 30-40:1
females)5-10:1 ; 20-30:1
1 slave.[2][10]

On 04 Apr 1836 the Clarke County, Alabama Records of Guardians and Estates note a bill of sale on the estate of Isaac Cox, deceased, Thomas B. Franklin, Administrator.[9]

Thomas married Mary McCorquedale on 18 Nov 1839 in Clark County, Alabama[9] and the couple had the following known children:

  1. Nancy Franklin was born about 1841 in Alabama.[6]
  2. Catherine Franklin was born about 1843 in Alabama.[6]
  3. Thomas Franklin was born about 1845 in Alabama.[6]
  4. Rosana Franklin was born about 1847 in Alabama.[6]
  5. Hugh Franklin was born about 1849 in Alabama.[6]

He appears on the 1840 census of Clarke County, Alabama with the following household members:

males)-5:1 ; 5-10:1 ; 10-15:2 ; 15-20:1 ; 40-50:1
females)-5:1 ; 5-10;1 ; 10-15:1; 20-30:1
4 slaves[3][11]

His household was accidentally counted twice in 1840 appearing on pages 248[12] and 253[3] of the census that year with identical households.[11]
