Thomas was born in 1834, probably in New York City, New York, ^[1] and passed away before 1880 in New York City, New York. ^[2] He was the son of William Franklin and Mary (last name unknown)^{[3] [4]}

On July 28, 1873, he married Virginia Louisa Griffin. ^[5] She was the daughter of Zelotes Griffin and Abigail Taylor. ^[6]
