Biography

Edward was born about 1770 in Maryland. He died about 1850, or thereafter in Georgia, possibly in Bulloch county. [1]

Given that he was born in Maryland and that the name Purnell is so prominent in his family (his son, grandsons, great-grandsons, etc), it is believed he was the son of John Franklin and Sarah Purnell of Worcester county, Maryland. He may have been named after his paternal grandfather Edward Franklin, also of Worcester county, Maryland. Another prominent name in his family was Selby (his son, grandsons and great-grandsons). Edward named his son Selby Franklin, probably after his maternal grandmother Mary Selby (1708–1761).

It appears that Edward was the youngest son of John Franklin and Sarah Purnell. As such, he probably inherited no land (no will has been found for John), and thus probably had to learn a trade and move to find cheaper land. Given this, sometime before 1810, Edward moved from Maryland to Duplin county, North Carolina. [2]

Edward married Miriam Newton on 1 Feb 1809 in Duplin, North Carolina. [3] Miriam was the daughter of Abraham Newton and Sarah Singleton. Edward and Miriam had the following children:

  1. Purnell Franklin was born on 25 Dec 1809 in North Carolina. He died on 03 Oct 1887 in Bulloch, Georgia. He married Susan Alderman on 11 Dec 1832 in Bulloch County, Georgia. She was born on 25 Dec 1814 in , Duplin, North Carolina. She died on 07 Nov 1897.
  2. Sarah Franklin was born about 1812 in North Carolina. She died after 1860. She married Timothy Bryant on 23 Mar 1830 in Bulloch, Georgia. He was born about 1801 in North Carolina. He died after 1880.
  3. Abram Franklin was born in 1815 in North Carolina. He died in Mar 1876 in Thomas County, Georgia. He married Margaret McDonald in Montgomery County, Georgia. She was born in 1817 in Montgomery County, Georgia. She died on 22 Dec 1880.
  4. Selby Franklin was born in 1819 in Georgia. He died on 01 Jun 1857 in Lithia, Hillsborough Co, Florida. He married Elizabeth Alderman in Aug 1842 in Tallokas, Lowndes Co., Georgia. She was born in 1826 in Georgia. She died on 18 Mar 1857 in Hillsborough, Florida
  5. George William Franklin was born on 12 Oct 1821 in Screven, Georgia. He died on 06 Sep 1884 in Plant City, Hillsborough Co., FL. He married Frances Melissa Stephens on 08 Oct 1869 in Hillsborough Co, Fl,. She was born on 20 Aug 1831 in South Carolina. She died on 18 Feb 1916 in Hillsborough County, Florida,. He married Lavinia Alderman in 1849 in of FL. She was born on 04 Mar 1829 in Bulloch County, Georgia. She died on 18 Jul 1868 in Plant City, Hillsborough County, FL (Shiloh Cemetery)

Miriam's family, the Newtons, were originally from Massachusetts. They moved to North Carolina, to the area in and around Duplin county, in the 1750s, and a number of their descendants married into the Alderman family.

Shortly after her marriage, Mariam's father moved to Kentucky. Other relatives moved south. Edward followed his wife's family (the Newtons and the Aldermans) when they moved from North Carolina to Screven, Wayne county, Georgia. Edward's son George was born there in 1821. Three of Edward's sons married into the Alderman family. George married Lavina Alderman, Selby married Elizabeth Alderman, and Purnell married Susan Alderman.

Edward appeared on the following census records:

  1. 1810 in Duplin, North Carolina [2]
  2. 1820 in Screven, Georgia [4]
  3. 1850 in Lowndes, Georgia [1]
