Genealogical Interests
Communication Preferences: I am interested in communicating with cousins and anyone else with an interest in genealogy.
Here is my family tree.
I've been in the trade for around 5 years now.
I have about 95 percent of Dutch ancestry, my grandparents immigrated to new Zealand in the 1950s and 60s, which is where I live now (I am third generation Dutch-NZ). I have a sprinkling of German, which I am trying to work on, and one or two Belgian and French ancestors, and maybe possibly some Jewish / Ashkenazic somewhere, I am also trying to confirm that. If you find a common ancestor with me, let me know, I would be very interested!

Biography
(updated 28th of December, 2024)
Hey everyone! Kia ora! Hallo! Kamusta kayo! Salvete omnes! χαῖρε, ὦ πάντα!
First and Foremost
I am a devout Christian and have been for as long as I can remember. I attend the Silverstream Reformed Church in, well, Silverstream and am a member there. I love the Lord Jesus and know that one day I will see Him in Heaven!
Birth and Early Life
My name is Alex J* Fransen. I was born in (private) 2004 at the Wellington Women's Hospital, to (private parents). I was born with (to skip all the long-winded jargon) small scarred kidneys. In my first 18 months of life, I had multiple surgeries and have had regular checkups and tests ever since. I recently moved to Stage 4 CKD, as it seems my kidneys are beginning to pack it in. Uncertain times...
Education and Career
I attended Maranatha Christian School in Belmont from Years 1-8 and was homeschooled with the ACE Curriculum from Years 9-12 due to health concerns related to the above. I did not complete Year 13 because I had uni-entry qualifications a year early.
So I planned to study Paramedicine in 2023, at the local WelTec. God has had other plans, as that door was abruptly shut in my face. I didn't get accepted and was very bluntly told why not. Turns out there was discrimination of race and religion behind it.
I worked full-time at PaknSave Upper Hutt for two years. I worked in the produce department, specifically dealing with the vegetables. Cut meself a good time with the knife though...5 stitches later and a week off, I was fine :D
After just over two years of full-time work, I undertook studies at Te Herenga Waka, the Victoria University of Wellington. I am studying for a Bachelor's Degree in Arts, majoring in Classical Studies, Classical/Attic Greek, and Classical Latin. In the meantime, I am continuing working weekends and holidays at the supermarket.
At the time of writing this, I have finished my first year of three, and, thank the Lord, have passed with straight A's!
On the 9th of December, 2024, I was awarded the Ruakine Brown Prize in Classics for 2024. This prize, awarded by the Victoria University of Wellington, is awarded to the best first-year Greek and/or Latin student of the year.
A couple of days later, I was honoured by my inclusion on the Victoria University of Wellington Dean's List for 2024.
I believe that God is calling me to serve Him in pastoral ministry. Lord willing, after university, I hope to attend a Reformed theological seminary to study more about God's Word, how to apply it to my own life, and how to share it with others.
Hobbies
I have too many hobbies! I collect orchids, rocks and minerals, coins, stamps, and LEGO sets. Genealogy is a hobby too. I'm learning two languages. I also play the piano - recently I've been playing in our church.
Languages
Recently, and following my studies, I have become fascinated with languages. I am a native speaker of English. With my studies, I have intermediate experience with Classical Latin, and with the Attic and Koine dialects of Ancient Greek. Through my workmates, I am picking up a little Tagalog/Filipino, and through my parents, relatives, and genealogy research, I know a few words of Dutch.
Family
I live with my parents and three younger siblings. Close by live my mother's parents and some of the uncles and aunties, literally down the road. My father's mother is in a rest home and my father's father passed in 2021.
Genealogical stuff
Apart from me and my parents being born and raised in New Zealand, the vast majority (90-95%) of my ancestry hails from the Netherlands, primarily from Zuid-Holland. I have ancestors from the provinces Noord- and Zuid-Holland, Friesland, Noord-Brabant, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland, Drenthe, Overijssel, Groningen, and Limburg- literally all the provinces except Flevoland (yep, I'm a real Dutch mongrel). There are a few branches of German and one or two Belgian and Polish ancestors. Possibly some Dutch Jewish/Ashkenazi and maybe some Huguenots in the mix too. I am currently working on adding all my ancestors onto WikiTree, from FamilySearch. Once I have done that as best as I can I can continue the projects I have started.
Earliest paternal (Y-DNA) ancestor: my 8x-great grandfather Joannes Franssen. Born around 1630 in a small village about 17 km east of Maastricht; he married Anna Loijson in 1654 in a Catholic parish there.
Earliest maternal ancestor on my father's side (my father's earliest maternal ancestor): still working on this :) will update shortly
Earliest paternal ancestor on my mother's side: my 8x-great-grandfather Berendt te Borgh-horst. Born around 1650 somewhere around Warnsveld (in Gelderland); married in 1673 and 1690.
Earliest maternal (mitochondrial DNA ancestor): my 11x-great-grandmother Betjen Arends, born before 1640 in Naaldwijk (in Zuid-Holland).
I have a Holtslag Surname Study which I have taken a break from for the aforementioned reasons.
I also have started a massive-scale Battle of Waterloo Project which currently has 8 members. I have been working on bringing the project together as well as the Dutch officers that served in the Battle.

Nah, I'm kidding!
In the event of my untimely death (when is death ever timely?) I 'bequeath' all my managed profiles to the WikiTree Admin. If you have an interest in any of the profiles then please adopt them or feel free to edit them.
However, if anyone in my family wants to continue this work I've started then they shall have precedence over any profiles they desire to own.
If I die, then I will get my mother or another family member to post something on
the G2G Forum and then close the account.

Very sorry to be slow on this- My area has been down with no internet or email.
I have now awarded to you the Military and War Badge. This is the project page link for you to read. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Military_and_War
The closest war was War of 1812. This was stated. "the War of 1812 was in fact an extension of the Napoleonic Wars then being fought in Europe. Ever since the 1790's, Britain and France's were pitted in a contest for supremacy." https://www.history.nd.gov/exhibits/lewisclark/war1812.html#:~:text=Also%20known%20as%20%E2%80%9CMr.,in%20a%20contest%20for%20supremacy. Thank you for your interest in the Military and War Project.

If we don’t hear from you in the next 30 days, your membership badge will be removed. In this case please don't be offended ... you're welcome to rejoin at any time. Please also note, that in order to receive help, with researching your German ancestors, membership is not mandatory. If you wish to remain a member, we would like to learn more about your perception of the Germany Project in order to achieve a future development according to our members needs and wishes. For this, we created a survey, which we kindly ask you to fill-in.
In case you want to communicate, discuss and receive help about WikiTree in German, you might want to check out the WikiTree category at Compgen’s Discourse as well as the German Discord server Ahnenforschung.
Of course there’s still the official WikiTree Discord server, where we usually talk English. Feel free to learn more about Discord and the server at Help:Discord.
Kind regards from Black Forest
I still wish to remain a member of the Project. Thanks for checking in!
Also I have filled out the survey.

The New Zealand Project is being re-activated. Would you still like to be a member and have a badge? If so, please answer this post or message me. I’ll add your badge and also send you the link to the Kiwi Crew Discord server. There is no obligation to take part in challenges, but you may like to work with others to create quality New Zealand profiles. We’re a really friendly bunch.
Ngā mihi
Fiona New Zealand Project Co-ordinator (Membership)
I am so glad to hear that the project is being reactivated! Yes I would very much like to be a member of the project, and a part of the Kiwi Crew!
Chur!
Thanks for your interest in the Poland Project! The Project Page is continually being updated with new information in order for you to know what we are doing.
There are many ways you help us, which are outlined on the Project Page: Your Wikitree Profile and What can you do to help subtopics.

If you want to, I thought it might be fun for you to join the Genealogy Discord server. It's a big server with people from all over the world that are doing genealogy. The Low Countries have their own channel there too, where me and other Dutchies help eachother out. Besides that, it's also just a fun place to hang around and ask for advise quicker than g2g. Let me know if you would want to join. If not, that's oké too.
Kind regards Your cousin Nick
Many thanks,
Mary~ Project Coordinator, Military and War Project
Sorry for the late message. But yes, I have been relatively active over the last 6 months. I'm happy to be a part of this project, and can't wait to see what the future brings.
Cheers, Alex Fransen
Mary
It’s Germany Project check-in time again! Please respond within the next 2 weeks and let me know if you’re still interested in participating with the Project. Remember, the only requirements for membership in the Germany Project are (1) that you work on at least one German profile every 6 months and (2) that you respond to this check-in.
Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. In your response, we welcome any feedback you may want to give on the project (what you like about it, what you’d like to see us do, what we could change, etc.)
If you ever have any questions, please ask. I look forward to hearing from you soon!
I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Thanks for checking in. Everything is all good, still loving WikiTree and the Germany Project.
The only feedback I have is keep up the good work!
I can do that. I'm pretty sure I am a part of it already though, as I get daily updates from the Google group. Or am I not actually a member?
I researched what I could find regarding your subproject, Waterloo
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:The_Dutch_at_Waterloo
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Battle_of_Waterloo_Group
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Waterloo%2C_Arrived_6_Sep_1836
https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1362021/thinking-of-a-waterloo-project?show=1364736
https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/tag/battle_of_waterloo https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/261371/waterloo-veterans-do-you-have-one-on-your-tree https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/911925/eyewitness-account-of-the-battle-of-waterloo
Then you create space pages for the Battle/ battles.
This is the project page for The French and Indian War https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:French_and_Indian_War
On any subproject page there is what is called the Project page (you all can write it as a space page, but when I last updated the French and Indian War, it needed a leader to actually put on the format you see.
This is the space page for World War II https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:World_War_II
Study these.. All project use a project page that shows the leader , the Coordinators, the Members. Another topic shows the actual space pages created for the project.
Do you know how in the planning and actual work was done???? Were Badges issued???
I will try to ask Eowyn.
thanks

Thank you for your help. I will study those pages and try and get a sense of how a project should be laid out.
Cheers, Alex
I think we have interacted before on Wikitree when you were doing research in the Dutch East Indies, but now it looks like we are very distant cousins (six cousins, once removed it think?). And i see you hvae brought back that line further than i curently have it, so thats great.
Kind regards Nick
We're so happy to see you are still active on WikiTree and caring about the Dutch profiles. The Dutch Roots Project is looking forward to give the project a new fresh start to put the Dutch in a more prominent place on the WikiTree map. The project is currently managing over 50,000 profiles and the total number of Dutch profiles on WikiTree exceeds 500,000! Within the project we are monitoring the quality of the Dutch profiles and assisting other WikiTreers in producing those profiles. We would love to pick up some other tasks but to do so we need more volunteers. This is why we check in with the members of the DRP to see if you would like to help us expand.
1) Would you like to do some volunteer work for the Dutch Roots Project? 2) If yes, what kind of work would you prefer to do within the Dutch Roots Project? E.g. translating, sourcing, or something else you want to work on?
We hope for a positive reaction but please don't feel obliged to volunteer. We just want to have a group of persons we can ask to help us with certain activities
Kind regards,
Jan, on behalf of the Dutch Roots Project
Woah, that's a lot of profiles!!
Answer to 1) - Of course I would! Answer to 2) - That's a good question, probably sourcing? Also maybe linking unlinked profiles to our ever-growing tree.
Just wondering about this, though - would I go onto WikiTree+ and find unsourced or unlinked Dutch profiles from there, or is there another place to find them?
Cheers, Alex
Thanks so much for your speedy and positive reaction!
We are currently making a list of areas of interest specified by the respondents. I will put you on the ones Sourcing and Connecting, OK? Once we are done we will get back to all of you with more specifics!
As to finding Dutch unsourced or unlinked profiles WikiTree+ indeed is the place to go, IMHO. Like https://wikitree.sdms.si/default.htm?report=srch1&Query=fransen+unlinked+or+fransen+unsourced&MaxProfiles=500
Happy hunting!
Jan
The Germany Project Leaders are doing their semi-annual check-in with all project members and we want to verify that you’re still interested in being a member of the Project. Please respond by private message and let me know.
Are you currently working with one of our Sub-projects or Teams? If not, take a look at our main Project page for a full list.
We really appreciate your contributions on WikiTree, and thank you for all your hard work. If you have any questions, please ask. We would also love to hear any feedback you may have for the project.
I look forward to hearing from you soon!
Traci ~ Germany Project co-leader
Still happy to be a part of the Germany Project - as a matter of fact, I've finally gotten to the German roots of my family. Time to unpack them.
Thanks for checking in - much appreciated.
Cheers, Alex
Thanks for taking responsibility for Orphaned Profiles. This is a courtesy email to share the After Adopting Orphans FAQ which explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need from their profile managers. One quick way to find the profiles you adopted is by searching your Contributions List for the word "adopted" and "manager." You can find a quick link to your Contributions List in the My WikiTree dropdown menu.
If you will be working with any profiles needing GEDCOM cleanup, the AGC tool can help with formatting so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.
Let me know if you have any questions on how to find and record sources; find or merge duplicates; clean up GEDCOM or merged biographies; or interpret the Suggestions report. I'm here to help!
