Biography

Hugh (Fraser) Fraser Ist of Lovat is a member of Clan Fraser of Lovat.

Held land at Lovat and the Aird (Invernessshire), Linton (Peeblesshire) and Kinnell (Forfarshire).

Mentioned in charters in 1367, 1377, 1384, 1407 and 1410.[1]

Attended the coronation of Robert II at Scone in 1371.[2]

In 1377 he resigned the lands of Fayrelehope in the barony of Linton (today's West Linton) into the hands of James Douglas of Dalkeith and Linton.[2]

He had Issue:

  1. Alexander, the eldest, d. unm. 1415[3]

    1. Alexander, the elder, d. unm. 1430[3]
    2. Hugh, the younger, b. 1422, d. 1450[3]
      1. Thomas, pror of Beauly, d. young
      2. Hugh, d. 1501

Research Notes

It is often stated that Hugh Fraser married Isobell Wemyss. This is an error which seems to be the result of a confusion with his son, also called Hugh. See The Scots Peerage.[6][7]
Many sources number him as "4th of Lovat", but The Scots Peerage states that "... there are no authentic documents known in which any Fraser is styled of Lovat before the time of Hugh Fraser ..."[8]
Fraser contends that the title went to Alexander THEN Hugh.[9]

"Hugh, 2nd son, m. Janet de Fentoun in 1516, d. 1440"

I assume the marriage date was in fact 1416?

The title currently shows that it passed to son Hugh directly but Alexander Fraser says that it went to his elder brother Alexander first. Not having time to fully flesh this out, I added a research item regarding this opinion.
