Biography

Born 13 Mar 1868 in Cabrich but his birth was registered in Kiltarlity, Scotland. His parents were John Fraser and Barbara McLeod. [1]

Census records give him living in Kiltarlity until at least 1881

The 1901 Census shows him living in Cardiff Wales at Fitzharmon Embankment age 33 and head of the household, occupation draper, with brother Hugh (age 31), niece Jessie Mclennan McLennan-979 (age 20) and a servant, Mary Jones[2]

John Fraser appears to have married Annie Skewis around Jul-Aug-Sep 1903 in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales[3]. According to census data Annie was born in Felixstowe in 1881.

"LOCAL WEDDING AT HAVERFORDWEST—The marriage took place at Bethesda Chapel, Haverfordwest, on Saturday of Mr John Fraser, of the firm of Messrs J. and H. Fraser, Cardiff, and Miss Annie J Skewis, niece of Mr T. Mathias, estate office, Milford Haven, the ceremony being performed by the Rev W. G. Davies, Penarth. Mr Fraser is well known in connection with social work, particularly in the Saltmead district of Cardiff, where he has done much to foster the Forward Movement. On Thursday night he was the recipient of handsome gifts from his employees. The honeymoon is being spent in Inverness-shire."[4]

Welsh newspapers report him living at 3 Fitzharmon Embankment in 1899 and 1910

The 1911 census shows him living in Cardiff Wales (age 42) his father John (aged 76), wife Ann (aged 30) and two daughters: Barbara McLeod Fraser (aged 6) and Peggy (or Margaret?) McLeod Fraser (aged 21 months). There was also one child who had died. He is recorded as being a travelling draper and outfitter. The 1911 census also records him having 2 employees. The same census also records his birth place as Cabrich, Inverness-shire although the birth record records it as Kiltarlity, Inverness-shire.[5]

In 1917 he and a wife with surname Skewis had a daughter Joyce McLeod Fraser born in Cardiff Wales[6]

Research Notes

Two daughters may have immigrated to New York around 1954, aboard the "Queen Elizabeth" or may have settled and married in Wales. Source needed to clarify.
