According to a headstone in the Laggan Parish Burial Ground, John McDonald died at Balgowan 17th March 1837, aged 60, and Ann Fraser, died 10th June, 1856, aged 48. This headstone was erected by their son, John, gamekeeper at Abertarff. (Balgowan is close enough to Cluny for John to have been the miller there, and it is possible for this couple to have been Catherine's parents. On Harriet's death certificate, James Crossan stated her mother's maiden name to be Fraser, which is incorrect, but he could have been confused with her mother's maiden name.)
