Biography

Birth and Marriage

Margaret Fraser, daughter of Hugh Fraser IV of Culbokie, Inverness-Shire, Scotland[1][2] and an unknown mother, married Patrick Grant IV of Glenmoriston on an uncertain date. Their marriage produced the following issue:

  • John Grant (d. before 1703), also called Iain Donn (John the brown-haired), was the fifth laird of Glenmoriston. He married a daughter of Fraser of Struy.[1][2]

Margaret's date of birth has been roughly estimated based upon the likewise estimated birthdate of her husband, Patrick IV, where he is mentioned as having been a witness to family documents from 1603[3] or 1605[2] onward. Assuming he was at least 21 when serving as witness, his date of birth has been estimated as occurring circa 1582. What is known, however, is that Patrick IV's great grandfather, John Mor Grantdied in 1548, at which time his son, Patrick II of Glenmoriston, who was underage, became ward of James Grant of Freuchie.[2] It is roughly estimated, therefore, that Patrick II was born circa 1528, with an assumption that he was at maximum 20 years old at the time of his father's death, although probably younger. Patrick II's son, John III, if born when his father was 25 (and father of Patrick IV), may have been born about 1553. If Patrick IV was at least 21 in 1603, his father John III would have been 29 years old at John III birth.[4] Based on this possible timeline, Margaret's birthdate has been estimated as occurring in 1586, four years after her husband's date of birth.
