PRESS, VOLUME LXXII, ISSUE 21783, 15 MAY 1936 Obituary - The death occurred at Christchurch last evening after a long illness of Mr Charles Kay, a well-known resident of Lyttelton. Mr Kay, who was born in Lyttelton and educated at the Lyttelton Borough School was a plumber until his retirement a few years ago. He was at one time in partnership with the late Mr W. C. G. Taylor. As a young man Mr Kay took an active interest in the Lyttelton regattas and was a member of the Lyttelton Regatta Club. He also took part in amateur theatricals and was a member of the Lyttelton Operatic Society, which produced “Les Cloches De Corneville” and other light operas in the ’nineties. Mr Kay was one of the founders of the Lyttelton Young Men’s Club. He was a Past Master of the Canterbury Kilwinning Masonic Lodge, and was a former trustee of the Loyal City of Norwich Lodge of the Lyttelton Oddfellows’ district, also a member and for a term, chairman pf the committee of the Lyttelton District High School. He served as a member of the Lyttelton Borough Council for nine years, and successfully advocated the laying of the first tar-sealed road in Lyttelton—London street. Mr Kay leaves one son, Mr Charles Kay. of Lyttelton. His wife died about four years ago.[4]
