Biography

ALEXANDER FRASER was the son of James and Barbara Joss. The family came to Canada in 1856, settling in Arthur village, County of Wellington, where James engaged in contracting and building. Their children were:

  • James Fraser,
  • Mary S. Fraser,
  • John Fraser,
  • Isabella Fraser,
  • Bathia Fraser,
  • Isabella Fraser (2),
  • Jean Fraser and
  • Janet Fraser.

Alexander Fraser sailed for Canada in 1856 with his uncle, Hugh Fraser, with the intention to secure a home for his parents prior to their arrival. However, his boat was delayed, and he arrived with his uncle after his parents had landed.

He began working with his father in the village of Arthur, County of Wellington, before moving to Toronto in 1887.

Through his entire life he was engaged extensively in railway contracting work, primarily with the Canadian Pacific, constructing cordons, bridges, etc.

In 1864 Mr. Fraser was married to Sarah Frances Giles (? - 2 Apr 1906), born in Ireland, daughter of James Giles and Jane Jephson (? - 1872).

Alexander Fraser and Sarah Giles had the following children :

  • Amelia Fraser (21 May 1866 - ?); [1]
  • James Giles Fraser, of Toronto, who married Minnie May; they had one daughter,
    • Sarah Fraser;
  • Jane Fraser (30 Oct 1869 - 21 Dec 1956), [2] [3] the wife of Richard Edwin Jamieson, of Vancouver, B.C.; they had three children,
    • Frank Fraser Jamieson,
    • Janie Jamieson and
    • Sarah F. Jamieson;
  • Henry Wernham Fraser (14 Sep 1880 - 18 Feb 1960), of Vancouver, B. C. ; [4] [5] and
  • Walter Jephson Joss Fraser (? - 1902).
