Biography

Janet was born around 1804 (see Notes) in Urray, Ross and Cromarty the daughter of William Fraser and Ann Mcdonald

In 1825, Merkinch, Inverness Janet Fraser married Kenneth Chisholm, who was a Weaver

Janet states she is from Urray in one of the censuses.

Janet and Kenneth had 7 children, these have baptism dates of the children iand I have included witnesses :

• Thomas Chisholm, 1826- William Fraser and Hugh Rhind (1841census shows Hugh to be a neighbour in Factory Street)
• William Chisholm, 1829 - William Fraser and George McLeod
• Farquhar Chisholm, 1832 - William Fraser and James Mcdonald

• David Chisholm 1837 Rodk Harrald and Thomas Grant
• Elizabeth Chisholm, 1839 -Hugh Rhind and Alexander Mcdonald
• Catherine Chisholm 1842 - Hugh Rhind and John Fletcher

Janet and Kenneth lived on Factory Street throughout all the census entries.

• 1841 - Factory Street - Janet and Kenneth with Thomas William Farquhar and William^[1]
• 1851 - 4 Factory Street - Janet with Kenneth and William ^[2]
• 1861 - 4 Factory Street - Janet with Kenneth, William, and Bella Fraser (relative from Ross-shire a dressmaker aged 18) See Research Notes^[3]
• 1871 - 4 Factory Street - Janet and Kenneth - this clearly shows Urray as her place of birth. Previously noted as Ross-shire^[4]

She passed away in 1875 and is buried at the churchyard Inverness.

Research Notes

There is a baptism record at Killearnan in 1804 that is very possible. The space for mothers maiden surname is left blank but otherwise it fits, both Location and the year: "Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQ79-SYM : 12 February 2020), Jannet Fraser, 1804.

The death record information is incorrect - Kenneth and Janet's son William had stated Ann Bisset as his mother's mother and William Fraser, Hemp Weaver as her father.

After research, we know that father William is correct and that he had married twice - Ann Mcdonald (Janet's mother) and after her death, Mary Bisset.

William Chisholm did not know his grandmother's name (she had died approx 60 years earlier when his mother was a little girl) and appears to have muddled up both the names of the two wives of William Fraser, his grandfather.

This misinformation continues with Janet's sibling's death certificates as both parents had died young, Ann after the birth of her youngest child, John. William Fraser, we believe died in the 1830s.

John Fletcher is the husband of Isabella Fraser, sister of Janet. It is interesting to note that Kenneth Chisholm is a witness at the baptism of John Fletcher in 1839 and William in 1842.
