Biography

Jane Fraser was born Jean Fraser about 1809/1810 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland to parents James Fraser & Agnes (Anne) Paterson.

Jean (Jane) Fraser married William Duncan in 1828 in Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland and they had 11 children (8 boys & 3 girls).

Note: Jean is the Scottish form of Jane and is sometimes pronounced that way. Jane was married as Jean Fraser but known as Jane in the 1841 Census & later 1851 & 1861 censuses including her immigration & death record.

Jane & her family survived the cholera outbreak in the Parish of Tranent in the 1830's.

Jane Fraser and husband William Duncan & their 4 youngest children immigrated from Scotland to Victoria in 1865 on-board the ship 'Sam Cearns' via Liverpool.

They settled in Long Gully near Bendigo. Victoria near their son Matthew Duncan.

Jane Fraser passed away aged 61 in 1870 in Long Gully 5 weeks before her son George Duncan aged 23.

Jean (Jane) Fraser married William Duncan on the 28 Nov 1828 in Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland. Their marriage record has her surname as Frazer & father as George Frazer. [1]

Immigration

26 Dec 1865: William Duncan (65) & Jane Fraser (54) & 4 of their children, George (20), Thomas (17), Anne (13) & Jane (11) immigrated to Victoria , Australia arriving in Port Phillip on the 26 Dec 1865 from Scotland after departing Liverpool 26 Sep 1865 on the ship "Sam Cearns' 11 years after their son Matthew had immigrated.

Note: Jane's 1870 Victorian BDM Death Record lists her father as James Fraser & mother as Ann (Unknown); however her 1828 marriage record lists her father as George Frazer.

Tragically her son George also died in Long Gully 5 weeks later on the 16 Feb 1870 aged 23.
