Biography

Hugh was born about 1811,^[1][2] likely at the West Branch East River. He was the son of Hugh Fraser.

Hugh married Mary Fraser, the daughter of John Fraser of West River.^[3] They had five children:^[3]

1. Hugh H.^[3]
2. Margaret^[3]
3. John^[3]
4. James^[3]
5. Alexander^[3]

In 1839 Hugh (and Christina his wife) of the West Branch East River sold about 200 acres to their son Hugh Jr.^[4]

Hugh and Mary appear in the 1871 census with their three youngest sons, and their oldest son is in the next household.^[1] Hugh and Mary are still together in 1891,^[2] and may have died before the next census.

Research Notes

Hugh Fraser should not be confused with his father Hugh Fraser (c1761-1841), his neighbour to the south Hugh Fraser (c1790-1879) who married Elizabeth McDonald, or Elizabeth and Hugh's son Hugh Fraser (1837-1918) who married Mary Hood.
