Charlene--

You've been here for three weeks now! We hope your profiles are starting to come together and that you've enjoyed getting to know all of us a little better. You're probably getting a good feel for the collaborative nature of WikiTree by now. We know that collaboration isn't always easy. So, we've put together a few pointers that can make working in this type of environment a little easier: How to be a Successful WikiTreer. As always, your questions are welcome!

Hello Charlene,

You may want to use your own surname in the Last Name at Birth field. This will ensure that your profile is listed on the correct surname page with other members and ancestors who also have that surname. Our naming conventions can be found at Name Fields.

When you use a hyphenated name, it does not usually get you to your ancestors as you might like. After you make the change of your last name at birth, you can use the hyphenated name in the field called ‘current last name.’ Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks, WikiGreeter Cindy

Thanks, WikiMessenger Cindy

Charlene --

Hi Charlene,

Thank you for the note and question!

Try searching for info on your grand father at one of the free website listed below.

Links for Family Search and Find a Grave:

https://familysearch.org/search/

https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cs

You will find other links for research and sources in the Wiki help page: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sources

Please make sure to look for duplicates on WikiTree before adding a profile. Having dates and locations attached to every person assists in our mission as well.

We also have a Help Index with links to topics you may have questions on.

Best of luck in solving your mystery and road block,

I'm so glad you volunteered!

You are now a confirmed member, and you can get started adding your family members.

As we've said, WikiTree is quite different from other genealogy sites. So, we've put together a guided tour to help you learn how to use it. Your first stop is How to Start Climbing Our Tree.

Tomorrow or soon after, a Mentor who will check in with you to see how you're doing and answer any questions you might have.

Next week, you'll get another message with your next stop on the guided tour.

Join in the fun with our Question of the Week in the G2G forum: What tips do you have for interviewing relatives?

See you in the branches!

Hi Charlene,

A warm welcome to WikiTree, a genealogy site different than any other! You should have received an email from us with helpful links to get started.

Our goal is to have one single profile per person so that we have ONE big family tree and we collaborate together to make that happen.

Each volunteer at WikiTree adds to the collaborative tree at their own pace, there are no minimum requirements for time or entry.

When you volunteer, you indicate your interests by adding tags and comments and then one of our Greeters will confirm your membership.

Please check out our question of the week What tips do you have for interviewing relatives?

Welcome to the family!
