His wife was Margaret, but it is unclear whether her maiden name was Fleming or Allison. Findagrave has conflicting information. More research is required to resolve her identity.


Will transcription from Ancestry.com: In the name of God Amen

I James Freeland of the County of Iredell and State of North Carolina being weak in body but in perfect mind and memory (Blessed Be God) do make and appoint this my last will and testament in manner following

First I will that all my lawful debts be paid from monies collected from my creditors and the balance (if any) out of the produce of the crop of the present year.

Second I give and bequeath to my wife Margret Freeland during her widowhood or natural life all of the land on which I live together with my stock, plantation tools and household furniture for the use of the family and at her decease or marriage the land to be equally divided between my two sons William A and M Franklin Freeland. It is also my will that all my household furniture one horse creature, 2 cows, & 2 sheep & one bed to be solely at the disposal of my wife.

I also will that my three daughters Nancy, Ann, & Lavina be each furnished with a horse creature at this time worth fifty dollars, a saddle, & bridle at this time worth fifteen dollars, one cow, and 2 sheep. This property not claimed until they are leaving the family and not sooner than four years from this date and that the three forementioned females have their support from the produce of the farm while they continue single

I do hereby constitute & appoint my beloved wife Margret Freeland sole Executrix of this my last will and testament
