Cornelius Bartley Freeman was born on July 3, 1847 in Franklin, North Carolina to William Allen Freeman and Cornelia J. Dent.
At some point prior to 1850 the Freeman family moved to the Houston area of south Texas.
Cornelius returned to North Carolina where he enlisted into the Confederate Army in 1861. He served in Company F, 47th Regiment as a Sergeant for the North Carolina Confederate Infantry.
Cornelius married Susan V. Scarborough on January 5, 1870 in Pennington, Trinity County, Texas. The result of their union was nine children.
By 1900 the Cornelius Freeman family was living in the Chactaw Nation, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) where they remained the rest of their lives.
Cornelius passed away on August 26, 1913 in Durant, Bryan County, Oklahoma. His final resting place is at Wade Cemetery.
