Biography

Sylvanus Freeman was born June 1800, the son of Capt James Freeman and Betsey Collins of Liverpool, Nova Scotia[1]

Like his father, Sylvanus was a mariner[2]

In 1824, he married Rebbecca Hammitt[1], who may have been the daughter of George Hammitt noted in page 390 and 401 of Volume IV of Simeon Perkins Diary[3]. Their children included:

  1. Mary, born 1828, who married Octavius Payzant[4], and who died in Gloucester, Mass in 1852[1]
  2. Malachi[1]. This may be James Malachi, born Oct 2, 1829, a shoemaker who married Mary Eliza Jewett December 31, 1857[5] [6], and who died in Gloucester, Mass in 1888[7]. Note his parents names in his marriage certificate.
  3. Geurdon, born 1831, who died March 11, 1852[1]

Capt Sylvanus Freeman died in 1851[1]. These sources do not note where and when.
