When James Freeman was born on November 11, 1719, in Woodbridge, New Jersey, his father, Henry, was 49 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 46. He married Euphemia Reynolds in 1742 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. They had eight children in 22 years. He died on April 8, 1793, in South Brunswick, New Jersey, at the age of 73.

On 1 April 1800, Jonathan Freeman sold 7 acres on the north side of Devils Brook, in South Brunswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey.[2] This was land purchased by Henry Freeman on 28 May 1741, then sold to his son James on 11 March 1761, then passed to James' son, Jonathan Freeman, by James' will dated 21 March 1793.
