Biography

John Freeman was born about 1823 in North Carolina.[1]

About 1841, John Freeman married Rachel Silver. The marriage date is estimated based on the age of their oldest child, Cynthia (born 1842), reported in the 1850 federal census.[1]

In 1850,[1] John Freeman (age 27, born North Carolina [NC]) was living in Yancey County, NC as head of household with the following Freemans, born NC (age, sex): i) William L. (3, M), ii) Benjamin (2, M), iii) Robert P. (1, M), iv) Rachel M. (27, F), v) Cynthia A. (8, F), vi) Rebecca (7, F). John's occupation was a farmer.

Of note, on the same 1850 census enumeration sheet,[1] the family immediately preceding was that of John Freeman (age 76, born NC) & Rachel Freeman (age 60, born NC).

In 1860,[2] John Freeman (age 45 [sic], born North Carolina [NC]) was living in Yancey County, NC as head of household with his wife, Rebecca Freeman (age 37, born NC), and their Freeman children, born NC (age, sex): i) Rebecca (16, F), ii) William L. (14, M), iii) Benoni [sic] (12, M), iv) Robert P. (11, M), v) Sarah E. (8, F), vi) George W. (6, M), Harriet E. (5, F), Dicey (3, F). John's occupation was a farmer; he owned real estate valued at $400 and personal estate at $211. Neither John nor his wife could read or write.

Of note, on the preceding 1860 census enumeration sheet,[3] the last family enumerated was that of John Freeman (age 86, born NC) & Rachel Freeman (age 69, born NC).

In 1870,[4] John Freeman (age 52, born North Carolina [NC]) was living in Grassy Creek Township, Mitchell County, NC as head of household with his wife, Rachel Freeman (age 42, born NC), and their Freeman children, born NC (age, sex): i) Rebecca (24, F), ii) George W. (15, M), iii) Dica C. (13, F), iv) Phantha (12, F). John's occupation was a farmer; he owned real estate valued at $500 and personal estate at $200.

Of note, on the same 1870 census enumeration sheet[4], the next family enumerated was that of Benjamin Freeman (age 22, born NC) with his wife, Margaret Freeman (age 26, born NC), and their 2 children.

In 1880,[5] J. V. Freeman (age 58, born North Carolina [NC]) was living in Grassy Creek Township, Mitchell County, NC as head of household with his wife, Rachel Freeman (age 54, born NC), and the following unmarried/single Freemans, born in NC (age, sex, relationship to head): i) Martha (17, F, daughter), ii) Rebecca (34, F, daughter [& mother to the following children]), iii) Haret (10, F, daughter), iv) Charles (1, M, son).
