Biography

Leonard was born in 1913 in Georgia with his twin, Lena Freeman, to Milton Freeman and Margaret Unknown. In 1920, the family was living in Waycross, Ware, Georgia.[1]

In 1930, he was living in Miami, Dade County, Florida, with his sister, Ruth Freeman Camp, and her family. He was sixteen, not in school, but was working as a packer for an ice company.[2]

In 1940, Leonard registered with the WWII draft in Miami, Dade County, Florida.[3] He listed his "sister", Mrs. Glynn Hamilton, as the person who would always know his address. This was Lena, his twin sister. She was living in Chillicothe, Ohio, at the time. Leonard had been working for Merchants & Miners Transportation Company, and living on the SS Dorchester Coastwise Vessel. He stated his date of birth as 13 Nov 1912., but numerous records for Lena show the year as 1913.

In the 1950 census Leonard (age 37), Cook, was the never married brother-in-law of Everett B. Angus in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio, United States.[4]

Leonard passed away in 1972 in Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio, United States. The death record states he was single at the time of death.[5] The SSDI states his birth year as 1912.[6] Burial was in the Washington Cemetery, Washington Court House, Fayette County, Ohio. This is the same cemetery in which his sister Lena Freeman Hamilton is buried. His militay marker states he was a SC1 (USNR officer designation for Special Service, Special Communications Duties) in the US Navy during WWII.[7] A photo of the actual grave has been requested.

His obituary stated: He resided at 265 W Norwich Ave in Columbus, Ohio. He had five sisters who survived him. Services were held in the Parrett Funeral Home in Washington Court House, Ohio. The Rev Dale Orihood, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene, officiated.[8]
