Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Francis (French) Gaulding is a part of US Black heritage.

Francis was born about 1856. She was the daughter of Judy French (1815-bef.1910), and was born enslaved.

The 1870 Census[1] shows her at age 14 in the home of her mother, Judah (Judy) French in DeSoto County, Mississippi.

She married Colemon Gaulding (1854-1914) on 14 Aug 1872 in DeSoto County, Mississippi.[2] They had nine children, only two survived past 1900. Their known children:

  1. Alfred Gaulding (1878-1896)
  2. Charles Gaulding (1880-1970)
  3. George Gaulding (1881-1962)

Historical Note: Tate County, Mississippi was formed in 1873 from portions of De Soto and Marshall Counties.

The 1880 Census[3] shows her at age 25 with her husband, two children, her mother and a nephew in Senatobia, Tate County, Mississippi.

The family moved to Oklahoma in 1889.

The 1900 Census[4] shows her at age 42 with her husband, two children and her mother in Earlsboro Township, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma Territory. This census stated that she had 9 children with 2 still living.

The 1910 Census[5] shows her at age 51 with her husband and one son in Earlsboro Township, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma.

Her date of death is not yet known.

Slave Owner

The Will of George French, dated 27 Feb 1860, in De Soto County, Mississippi, names his slaves.[6] Included are:

  1. Jude, a negro woman aged 44 years.
  2. Francis, a girl aged 3 years.
