Biography

Charity French (male) was born 15 Aug 1747 in Stratford, Fairfield, Connecticut [now United States], to Jeremiah French and Hannah.[1][2]

Charity was christened on 20 Sep 1747 at Christ Episcopal Church, Stratford, Fairfield, Connecticut.[3]

Charity French, son of Jeremiah and Hannah French, married Mercy Dewey, daughter of Martin and Elizabeth Dewey. (Possibly around 1773 based on birth of first child.[4]) Charity resided in Pittstown, New York in 1775-6. He was a Loyalist in the American Revolution, imprisoned 1776, escaped 1777 to New York City where he served under Col Willard of British Army. After the war, he moved to Dover, Dutchess County to rejoin his family. He was arrested and escaped to New Brunswick in 1783-4, where he subsequently lived unitl he died in 1813 in St John, New Brunswick [now Canada].[5]

The transcriptions in Family Search and Ancestry indicate that this person was female. But the original record is not available to check; possibly record does not specify and it was assumed female?

Based on marriage, Charity was male. Based on record for first child, daughter Charity, Charity the father was male.[4]
