Emily (French) Punter (bef. 1866)

I've looked into it and I'm sure she's NOT the same person. I think the birth belongs to my Emily but not the marriage which took place in Harpenden in 1897 (registration district: St Albans) according to 'England, Select Marriages, 1538-1973' and Emily is said to be 27. There is another Emily French birth registered at St Albans in Q3 of 1871 which is much more likely. In the 1901 census, 'Emily Punter' is a sister-in-law, living in Harpenden, aged 31, in the household of Charles and Sarah Hedges and her birth place is said to be Wheathampstead (reg. district: St. Albans!). Also in the household is Emily French, 75, mother-in-law of Charles, so that's pretty conclusive (my Emily's mother's name was Martha and she didn't have a sister called Sarah). (My Frenches are related to the Wheathampstead Frenches but they moved away several generations earlier.)

Hm. I thought it would be easy to find her baptism. but now I'm not so sure. There's an Emily French, daughter of James and Eliza baptised in Wheathampstead on 26 Nov 1871. But Eliza is not normally confused with Emily (edit: and, doh!, her father's name is William on the marriage record). And then there's an earlier one on 29 Jul 1866 in Wheathampstead, to William and Emma. But she seems too old...

So I have Sarah French baptised 4 Oct 1857 in Wheathampstead, child of William and Emily, then Marianne French (visitor to the Hedges on the 1911 census) baptised 29 Jun 1862 in Wheathampstead, child of William and Emma. So I think that's the right family and the Emily who married Alfred lied about her age because she was a fair bit older than him???
