William French Jr. from Pittsfield was a Private in Company H of the 20th Regiment, Mass. Volunteer Infantry. "The Harvard Regiment". Age 43; farmer; enlisted at Williamstown, MA, Dec 12 or Dec 23, 1861; mustered Dec 26, 1861; discharged for disability, April 14, 1862, at camp near Yorktown, VA. ("An old fracture of the fibula which incapacitates him from marching.") Also listed as a Teamster. Served under Capt. Shepardson.
Elizabeth French, wife of William French from this regiment, applied for widow's pension Oct 21, 1883. Claimed he died of rheumatism contracted in the line of duty. This William filed an affidavit for his father's pension application in July 1871, and was living in Bennington. Pension was granted for $8 per month.
This is from the October 13, 1875 issue of The Green Mountain Freeman: "A few days since, Mr. William French, of the town of Bennington, fell from a tree while picking appels [sic], and was so injured internally as to cause his death."
They are buried in Village Cemetery in Bennington, Vermont.
