John Frend DSO was born in Ireland.

John Roberts Frend was born on 7 February 1883. He was the son of Sir George Frend and Lucy Blackett. [1]

He gained the rank of Major in Army. John fought in the Boer War and the 1st World War with the 2nd Battalion, The Leinster Regiment (previously known as the Connaught Rangers).

He emigrated to Australia where he met and then married Mary Davida Campbell (daughter of Henry Campbell) on 6 August 1919 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

OBITUARY.
MAJOR J. R. FREND.
Major John Roberts Frend, who died at a private hospital in Darlinghurst, served in the Boer War and the Great War. He was 48 years of age.
Born in Ireland, Major Frend was the son of the late Mr. George Frend and Mrs. Frend, of Silver Hills, Co. Tipperary. He came to Australia in 1909, and went on the land. In later years he lived on his property, Wahroonga, Gunnedah, having acquired his experience of a grazier in the Cobar and Coonamble districts. Distinguishing himself as a soldier, he first served in the Boer War, rejoining the 2nd Leinster Regiment at the outbreak of the Great War. While acting as Colonel he was mentioned in despatches on several occasions, and decorated with the D.S.O. and bar. He also fought with the Imperial 29th Division.
Major Frend is survived by Mrs. Frend and three sons. Mr. Henry Frend, of Gulargambone, is a brother.
