Biography
Allen Fried has German Roots.
Allen Fried was a Pennsylvanian.
Allen, son of Marcellus Fried and Amanda Adams,[1] was born 11 December 1875 in Spring Garden Township, York County, Pennsylvania.[1][2] His parents had him baptized 14 April 1876 at Christ Lutheran Church in York, York County.[1]
Before 1900 much had changed: His father had died in 1895,[10] Allen had married,[4] and his wife was pregnant with their first child. At that time his widowed mother Amanda Fried (age 51, mother of four, all living) had purchased a home on East Market Street in the city of York, York County, which she shared with Allen C. (25, painter) and his bride Daisy Estelle (26, no children).[11] Amanda Fried (age 60), Allen C. (33, painter). Daisy E. (33) and their son Russel Samuel (age six months) remained in the same house in 1910.[12]
When Allen registered for the draft in September 1918, he was still living in the Market Street home and working as a contract painter.[2] He was described as tall and stout with gray eyes and dark hair.[2] Did he realize as he contemplated his own possible death as a soldier that his own wife had little time left to live?
Daisy died the following month during the Spanish Flu Pandemic on 20 October 1918.[13] In 1920, Allen C. (age 44, retail grocer) and his son Russel A. (9) continued to live in the home they owned on Market Street, but with the addition of Daisy's sister
Mabel Rosanna Frey (39, housekeeper), who was probably recruited to help raise Russell.[14] There is some indication that Mabel and Allen may have married between 1920 and her death in 1929.[15]
Allen and Russell drop from the records until Allen's death 21 November 1941 in York.[16] He was buried at Mount Rose Cemetery in Spring Garden Township, York County.[16]
Research Notes
Marriages: Find-a-Grave shows Allen married to sisters in succession; however, more evidence is needed. He and Mabel lived together in 1920, but she was indicated as his sister-in-law. Their marriage, if it existed, would be between 1920 and her death in 1929.
