Biography

She was baptized Theresia Barbara.
Jacob Joseph Heinrich Henry married Barbara Thresa Fries in 1869 when he was 31 years old.
Barbara , Jacob, and the first five children moved to Columbus, Nebraska in 1878 and then they, with two more children, moved in 1887 to Squaw Creek, Sioux County. They were then counted as living in Montrose Precinct, in which the town of Montrose was four or five miles away from Squaw Creek. Probably they got their farm land free in the late 1800s when the USA was giving free land to entice people to settle the West.
Barbara and Jacob had seven children, all of whom were still living by 1900:
  • Catherine Mary, b. 21 Nov 1869, Germantown, WI. d. 4 Nov 1960. By 1900, she had left although she didn't marry until 1901.
  • Jacob Joseph,Jr., b. 24 Feb 1871, Germantown, WI. d. 27 Feb1950. This first son married in 1897 and rented a nearby farm (maybe there was no more free land).
  • Anna Mary, b. 6 May 1874,Germantown, WI. d. 25 Oct 1948. By 1900, she had married (1894) and was gone.
  • John Peter, b. 5 Jul 1875, Germantown, WI. d. 1 Jan 1938.
  • Henry Andrew, b. 12 Oct 1877, Germantown, WI. d. 2 Oct 1907.
  • Elizabeth Catherine, b. 18 May 1880, Columbus, NE. d. 11 May 1977.
  • Charles Joseph, b. 29 June 1884, Columbus, NE. d. 16 Sep 1946. This child was probably named after Barbara's brother Charles Joseph, who is my paternal grandfather.
Jacob's 65-year old widowed mother Catharine was living with Jacob and Barbara in Wisconsin during the 1870 US Census, but had possibly died before the Nebraska 1880 Census.
Barbara was widowed in 1918 and eventually moved to South Dakota, perhaps to be near some of the Henry clan who had moved there.
