He was born in Sommerhausen on August 4, 1596, and died in Leipzig on June 28, 1657; he was buried on July 2 at St. John's Cemetery.
He attended secondary school in Sommerhausen. In 1607, he contracted the plague (from which his father died), but recovered. In 1608, he entered a Windsheim school of reading and mathematics [?]. In 1610, he moved to the home of Leonhard Laube, his mother's brother, in Leipzig; he remained at his uncle's shop until 1632.
On March 2, 1638, he was granted legal citizenship in Leipzig, and in 1633 became the owner of a cloth shop on Salzgäßchen.
