Biography

Prospère was born about 1828 in St. Mary's Parish, Louisiana, son of Francois Frilot and Rosela Bougere. He appears in the 1850 Census. He married Adeline Frilot and had 2 children with her; given that Amedee was born in Louisiana in 1858, he traveled to Mexico after that point and returned to New Orleans via the Antoinetta from Veracruz in 1867. He does not appear in the 1860 US Census, so we can presume that he traveled to Mexico between 1858 and 1860.

Adeline may have died in Mexico - there is no record of her death or of any divorce.

In 1868, he is in the New Orleans city directory as a "saddler" at Delord, cor. Clara.

He appears to have initially settled in the 9th Ward and worked as a butcher. (As did his brother Francois, who appears in several notable court cases regarding monopoly rights to slaughterhouses.)

He appears in the 1870 census living with his son Armand; it appears that some of Francois' children may be in his household as well.

He appears in the 1870, 1871, and 1872 city directories for New Orleans. His market in city directories is noted as

1. Chestnut, cor. Alix (Chestnut later became Belleville) 2. Verret, cor. Thayre. (Thayre later became Delaronde St.)

His residence in 1870 is noted as Trio, cor. Carondelet, although I think Trio=Clio

In later city directories, Francois' butchery is noted as being in the "St. John's Market" at 299 Carondelet. This was in Algiers, on the West Bank - here is the location of St. John's Market

His daughter Flora was born to Anna Jane Clarke and Prospere in 1871; Prospere may have married Anna prior to this, but I've found no marriage record.

In 1873, his residence is noted as "Webster av. between Patterson and Eliza, 5th dist." Webster became Whitney Avenue.

Does not appear in 1874, 1875, 1876, 1877, 1878. In 1874, his son George was born to Anna Jane Clarke. In later records, George's birthplace is given as Lafourche Crossing, Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, so Prospere and Anna may have been in Lafourche during these years.

1879 - he is back in New Orleans - directory notes he is a butcher at "Verret, cor. Thayre, 5th dist."

1880 - directory says "meat market, Chestnut, sw. cor Alix, 5th dist." He appears in the 1880 US Census.

He died on December 7, 1888. His obituary (below) notes he is from "Bordeaux, France," which is clearly false.

Obit - December 8-9, 1888:

"FRILOT - In this city, on Friday Dec. 7, 1888 at 4:45 o'clock, PROSPERE FRILOT, aged 65 years, a native of Bordeaux, France. The friends and acquaintances of the family are respectfully invited to attend his funeral from his late residence. No. 220 Josephine street, at 3:30 o'clock This (Saturday) Evening.

New Iberia, Opelousas, and Thibodaux papers please copy."
