John Henry Frost was born 10 August 1853 in Marblehead, Essex, Massachusetts, son of William Frost and second wife Mary Bean Dodd.[1]
He married widow Sarah Jane (Bailey) Rhodes (1851-1891), daughter of Elizabeth "Sarah" Lamprell (1827–1869) and Benjamin Franklin Bailey (1824–1899) , widow of Charles Hutchinson Rhodes, on 9 August 1875 in Marblehead, Massachusetts. [2]. John and Sarah Jane had the following children, all born in Marblehead:
John Henry continued the Frost family's seafaring tradition as a fisherman in his hometown of Marblehead. He was also a volunteer fireman with the M. A. Pickett Engine Company in town. While fighting a store and barn fire on Rockaway Street in Marblehead, on a treacherously windy winter day in 1886, a ladder lost its footing on the ice and landed on John. He sustained critical injuries to his head and spinal cord, losing his sight and mobility.
Prior to his injuries, John was a robust, athletic man standing over six feet tall, but the catastrophic injuries were too severe to overcome, and his health rapidly deteriorated.
The Town of Marblehead was shaken by the tragic accident, and held several fundraisers for John and his family to cover medical costs.
John died 28 Nov 1888 at his home in Marblehead, at the age of 35, less than two years after the fire. He left behind his widowed wife Sarah and four young children.[3][4]. The family would suffer another blow when Sarah died of chest pains/angina three years after her husbands death at age 35.
