Edward Charles (known to his descendants as 'EC') arrived in New Zealand, with his parents & siblings, as an 18 year old. The family initially settled in Ararimu near Waimauku north of Auckland.
Just 3 years later he began a flax fibre industry in Tuakau. Around 1870 the bottom fell out of the market and 'EC' ventured to the Northern Wairoa (Dargaville) to trade in timber, working teams of up to 28 bullocks.
The canning of whitebait then attracted his attention and during 30 years he developed an extensive whitebait industry on the Waikato River @ Tuakau.
Throughout his life 'EC' was a keen student of politics and was a staunch Methodist. It is believed he paid for the land on which the Salvation Army Citadel stands on Upper Queen Street, Auckland and in later life he became interested in bible numerics and copied out the Bible in longhand.
