Biography

Joseph Fruge was born 9 February 1765 and baptized on the 3rd of March 1765 at St. Francis of Pointe Coupee.[1]

Joseph's parents appear on the 4 May 1777 census of Opelousas, but the ages and some of the names seem off. Joseph should be 12 years old and should be three years younger than his brother Louis who is said to be 10 years old. [2]

According to The Frugés of Fakaitaic[3] Joseph first wed Angelique Turner, but the author doesn't list a date and he seems to attribute the daughter Angelique to this first wife but her baptism record does not support this.[4]

In 1785 Joseph appears on the Militia Rolls for the Opelousas Post dated 30 July 1785 as a rifleman and serving under Captain M. De La Morandiere.[5]

Sometime before 1789 Joseph wed a woman named Marie Magdeleine Fruge reportedly from Fort Pitt at the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers.[6] This is primarily known from their children's church records.

Known Children

  1. Angelique born 3 March 1789.[4] She wed William Moore from Ireland on 30 November 1805.[7]
  2. Magdelaine born 7 July 1790.[8] In 1813 she married Jean Bergeau.[6]
  3. Joseph fils born 28 October 1792.[9] He reportedly did not survive to adulthood.[3][10]
  4. Celeste born 28 August 1794.[11] She wed Louis Saint Germain on 10 April 1809.[12]
  5. Perrine born before 7 August 1796, her date of baptism.[13]

Many family trees show Joseph as dying about 1854, however I have seen no source for this information and I have not seen him on US census lists.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
