Richard Fry was born in 1838 in Kent, England. He was the eldest child of William Fry and Elizabeth Dunk but William's fourth son (William had been earlier widowed). He was christened in East Farleigh, Kent on 6 May 1838.[1]

William would have far too young to have memories of the family's great adventure as they emigrated to Victoria aboard the William Metcalfe; departed Plymouth 26th July 1839 and arrived Melbourne, in the Port Phillip District, Colony of New South Wales (later Victoria, Australia) on 15th November 1839. Melbourne at that time had barely been settled four years. So the Fry family were indeed pioneers.
Unfortunately, and even tragically, Richard passed away within months of their arrival in their new world. [2]
