Daniel was orphaned at a very young age. His father Nathan died 8 months before Dan was born and his mother Margaret died when he was about six months old. He was initially adopted by his paternal grandmother Nancy (McDaniel) Frye.[2].[3] When his grandmother died (when Dan was 11), Dan went to live with his aunt & uncle, Isaac Newton & Margaret (Weill) Fry.[4] While living with "Uncle Ike", Daniel was employed as a mule skinner for Isaac's road-building business. Once, when he was about 13, the river rose at night and washed supplies into the Monongahela River including a number of blasting caps. As Dan was helping to retrieve the supplies, one of the blasting caps went off, blowing off two fingers and part of a third on one hand.[5]
D.W. was married three times:
Alma Pearl Watson on December 8, 1928 in Wheeler County, Texas. [6] Alma passed away on February 8, 1932.
Leota Rea Johnson on December 20, 1932 in Sayre, Beckham County, Oklahoma.[7][8] Daniel and Leota were divorced in 1955.[3]
Daniel spent his first twenty or so years living in various places in southeast Ohio and north central West Virginia including Belpre, Washington County, Ohio, Clendenin, Kanawha County, WV, and Harrison County, WV[3] and was recorded in the US censuses of:
1910 (Dannie Fry, grandson of Nancy Fry, Washington County, Ohio)[2]
1920 (Daniel W Frye, brother-in-law of Jacob M Cozad, Harrison County, West Virginia)[11]
In 1926, along with his brother Robert Elwood Frye and Robert's wife Olga Marie Minder and a man (perhaps) named "Lummus", Daniel migrated to Wheeler County, Texas. He spent the rest of his life in west Texas in such places as Magic City & Shamrock, Wheeler County, Pampa, Gray County, and Plainview, Hale County[3] and was recorded in the US census of:
1950 (Daniel W. Frye, head, Wheeler County, Texas)[12]
D.W. died on July 22, 1981 in Plainview, Hale County, Texas.[13]. He was buried on July 25, 1981[14] in Plainview Memorial Park, Plainview, Texas.[15]
