BETHEL, Me., Nov. 5 (Special).—Mrs. Amanda A. Morton, who was one of the old time families of Bethel died suddenly at the home of her sister, Mrs. Sidney Abbott at Andover, Saturday night. Mrs. Morton was the widow of Dr. J. A. Morton, for many years a prominent physician in Bethel who died in 1905.
Mrs. Morton was born in Bethel, July 30th, 1835. Her parents were the late William and Lois Twitchell Frye and her ancestry dated back to Bethel's earliest settlers. She married Dr. J. A. Morton on July 22d, 1880 and always lived in Bethel until three years ago when she went to live with her sister, Mrs. Abbott at Andover. At the death of Dr. Morton's sister, Mrs. Jones, many years ago they took into the home two of her daughters, Grace and Emma. To them both Dr. and Mrs. Morton gave of their affection and the younger now Mrs. A. Van Den Kerckhoven became as a daughter. After the death of her husband Mrs. Morton made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Van Den Kerckhoven from whom she received the tenderest devotion.
Mrs. Morton retained her faculties in a marked degree and only a week before her death entertained her niece and her family. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Sidney Abbott of Andover, a niece, Miss Annie Frye of Bethel, Mrs. Grace Jones Faunce and two sons of Atlantic City, N. J. Mrs. A. Van Den Kerckhoven and family of Bethel.
