Biography

Mary appears on the Cherokee Census of 1896 as 1/8 blood in her own right, by virtue of her mother Maggie's descent as 1/4 Cherokee. Her mother is listed as residing in, or perhaps having been born in, the Going Snake District. "Francis" and the other children are listed in Saline District. Among Maggie's many children, the following are listed with her in this record: Frances, George, Lizzie, Samuel, Henry, Lillie, Minnie and Mary. This record was taken sometime after 21 August 1896. Mary is listed as age 2.

Mary is recorded on the 1900 Federal Census for District 29 of Township 20 in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory (Oklahoma), in the household of her parents, Henry and Maggie Frye. Her race is identified as Indian, as is her mother's. Her birthdate is given as October 1894, and her birthplace as "Indian Territory." She is one of the nine surviving children of her mother, who had a total of 10 at that time. She was 5 years old at the time, not recorded as attending school and not listed with any occupation.
