Biography

Beatrice was born at 9 Chapman's Buildings, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire on 22 October 1896, the daughter of James Fryer, ex sergeant in the Indian Army but by then a labourer in an iron works, and his wife, Sarah Jane Hobson. [1] James died in 1898 [2] and Sarah moved to Lincoln where she had some family. [3]Two of Trixie's brothers, Walter and Victor, went away to be educated by the Army and her youngest brother, Percy, died in 1902 aged 8.[4] Both Trixie's sisters, Ethel and Tilly, married in 1906 and then in 1907 her mother married the lodger, James Aymer Thoms, a physician. Trixie became very fond of him. There is no sign of them in the 1911 census.

By 1915, however, Mr Thoms was a ship's surgeon plying a route from Hong Kong to Vancouver. In 1917 Trixie gave birth to a daughter whose father she never named. In need of extra money she joined the Royal Flying Corps as a clerk at Lincoln and was discharged in September 1919 with a good character.

Archibald Carter Beatrice Fryer marriage 1920

On 27 November 1920 at Weymouth Register Office, Trixie married Naval shipwright, Archie Carter. Her sister, Tilly Peck and her uncle, Andrew Boggie were witnesses. Their only child, Aymer, was born in Portsmouth at 62 Lawson Rd, on 24 June 1924 and died on 25 September. [5][6]

In 1936 Archie was posted to HMS Suffolk [1], and sailed for the Far East. They were planning for a new life in Australia after he had completed his Naval service but Peggy was determined not to go with them. She was in love with a sailor, Bill Mackinnon, who was posted to HMS Maidstone and sailed for duty at Malta. The two women travelled there and Peggy and Bill were married in Sliema on 22 December 1938. Suffolk was ordered home when war broke out in September 1939 as was Maidstone. Trixie and Peggy joined the WRNS. Peggy's service didn't last long as she became pregnant. At the time the Register of England was taken Archie and Trixie were living at 54 St Augustine Rd in Portsmouth. [7] The person redacted on the return is almost certainly Peggy whose daughter was born late in 1940. The night of 10-11 January 1941 saw the worst air-raid on Portsmouth [2]and though their home at 54 St Augustine Rd wasn't destroyed it was rendered uninhabitable. Bill insisted that Peggy take the baby to the relative safety of his home in Johnstone, Scotland.

Archie and Trixie continued their service in the Navy and one night, going on duty, Trixie saw parachutes in the sky. She wasn't the only person to mistake landmines for paratroops and headed towards them to get herself a German. She was knocked unconscious in the explosion and suffered a broken jaw.

Trixie found a new home across the harbour in Gosport and Peggy and the baby returned in 1942. She was outraged at the defeat of Churchill in the 1945 election and took up politics.

Her brother, Victor, died in 1948, his death being registered in Edmonton. [8]

Archie died of cancer on 13 May 1951 [9]and Trixie became more and more involved in the political and social life of the town, being elected an alderman in 1960.

She died on the 31st of December 1982 aged 86 and was cremated at Portchester. Her death certificate records that she died on the 1st of January, due to the time it took to summon a doctor.
